The Trust Recession — And Why It’s the Best Thing That’s Happened to Your Business

This is the era of trust in business

There’s a recession happening right now that has nothing to do with interest rates.

It’s a trust recession.

And if you run an HVAC or electrical business, it’s quietly working in your favour — if you know what to do with it.

What’s actually going on

Every year, Edelman runs the biggest trust survey in the world. This year’s report is the bleakest one they’ve published in over two decades.

Globally, 70% of people say they’re now unwilling or hesitant to trust someone who’s different from them — different values, different background, different way of seeing things. People are pulling inward, into smaller, more familiar circles.

But here’s the bit that matters most for you.

Inside that same report, trust in family, friends and coworkers went up — 11 points. At the same time, trust in national government leaders fell 16 points over five years.

Read that again.

Trust in institutions, strangers and anything faceless is falling off a cliff. Trust in the people already in someone’s actual life is rising.

That’s the whole story of the trust recession in one line: people haven’t stopped trusting. They’ve just stopped trusting outward, and started trusting inward.

Why AI is pouring fuel on this fire

Layer AI on top of that and you can see exactly why.

Every home service business owner’s inbox, feed and search results are now flooded with AI-written reviews, AI-written ads, and AI voices doing a decent impression of a real person.

People are getting sharper at spotting it. Not because they’re cynical — because they’ve had to be. When you can’t tell if a review, a testimonial or a “friendly local expert” post was written by a person or a prompt, the sensible thing to do is stop trusting any of it by default.

So the market is doing exactly what the Edelman data shows. It’s retreating to the people it already knows.

Where that leaves you

Here’s what most business owners haven’t clocked yet.

An HVAC company or an electrician can’t be faked into someone’s home.

You were actually there. You did the work. Sarah next door actually watched you do it, and actually trusts you enough to put her own name forward when she recommends you to her sister.

No amount of AI-generated marketing can manufacture that. It’s not a content problem to solve with better prompts. It’s a real relationship, formed the old way — person to person, doing the work, being straight with people.

While everyone else is pouring money into ads and platforms competing with a hundred other faceless companies saying the exact same thing, the businesses who lean into real, personal trust are about to have the field almost to themselves.

The part that’s easy to miss

This isn’t really an “AI is bad” story. AI is genuinely useful, and I’m not here to tell you not to use it.

It’s a “the ground has shifted, and most people haven’t noticed yet” story.

For decades, trust and scale pulled against each other. To grow, you had to reach strangers — through ads, through platforms, through cold outreach — and strangers are naturally harder to earn trust with.

The trust recession quietly removes that trade-off for a home service business, because your best growth channel was never strangers in the first place. It was always the people who already trust you, and the people they know.

That’s not a consolation prize while everyone else scales with AI. Right now, it might be the single biggest advantage a trades business can have.

The one question worth asking yourself

You already have clients who trust you completely. The kind who’d happily introduce you to a friend, a neighbour, or someone at work — if it was easy, and if you asked in a way that didn’t feel awkward for either of you.

Most businesses leave that sitting there, unused, while they pour money into channels fighting the current instead of swimming with it. They don’t strategise it.

So here’s the only question that matters:

Who in your existing client base would already vouch for you — and have you actually made it easy for them to?

If you want to see exactly where your business is leaking referrals right now, I built a quick 8-tap diagnostic that shows you the gaps in under two minutes — no guesswork, just where the leaks are. It’s called the Referral Readiness Quiz, and you can find it on my profile.
